The pupae are usually eaten when they rise through the water column to the surface for hatching. As the gas expands in the intercuticular spaces, the rising p becomes increasingly translucent. Trout that feed on the rising p are known for being difficult to catch and picky, and they prefer shiny and translucent patterns over opaque and dark ones.
